HIPHOP IS THE FUTURE: TIRED OF BEING MARGINALIZED

Comics

Owing to my having been very, very drunk in order to celebrate the, uh, something of my country, here’s a late edition of HIPHOP IS THE FUTURE by the one and only Matt Dojny.

[1] “Sweden Neutral”! I made out something in a HHITF background!

Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita,
mi ritrovai per una selva oscura,
ché la diritta via era smarrita.

When I had journeyed half of our life’s way,
I found myself within a shadowed forest,
for I had lost the path that does not stray.

Dante, The Inferno, Canto I, lines 1-3[2a]

Mezzo Cammin

Half my life is gone, and I have let
The years slip from me and have not fulfilled
The aspiration of my youth, to build
Some tower of song with lofty parapet.
Not indolence, nor pleasure, nor the fret
Of restless passions that would not be stilled,
But sorrow, and a care that almost killed,
Kept me from what I may accomplish yet;
Though, half-way up the hill, I see the Past
Lying beneath me with its sounds and sights,–
A city in the twilight dim and vast,
With smoking roofs, soft bells, and gleaming lights,–
And hear above me on the autumnal blast
The cataract of Death far thundering from the heights.

HIPHOP IS THE FUTURE: WE HAVE NOTHING IN COMMON

Comics

by Matt Dojny

I usually hate to editorialize (okay, we all know that’s not true), but I love the way that Matt’s text has slightly visible older writing behind it. It’s like every single panel reminds the reader that something else could have been said, or was said, or will be said. Even in pieces that are essentially silly and gag-like, there are almost always little bits and pieces of strangeness floating around, pieces that don’t fit in with the simplicity of just a one-off joke. Matt admits that humor is complex, and isn’t afraid of introducing elements that encourage the reader to question whether there’s more to what they’re laughing about.
